Background of the Study
Online neologisms—newly coined words and expressions—reflect the dynamic creativity of digital communication in Nigeria. Social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are at the forefront of this linguistic innovation. Nigerian users generate neologisms that blend local languages with global slang, reflecting cultural identity and social trends. This study compares the formation and spread of online neologisms across different platforms, analyzing how digital affordances such as character limits, visual elements, and rapid dissemination foster creative language practices (Adeniyi, 2023). The research examines the morphological and semantic features of these neologisms, assessing their impact on everyday language use. By situating online lexical innovation within a comparative framework, the study highlights the transformative effect of social media on Nigerian linguistic creativity and contributes to broader theories of digital language evolution (Okoro, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
While online neologisms are widely recognized as evidence of linguistic creativity, there is limited comparative research on how different social media platforms foster this innovation in Nigeria. Existing studies often focus on isolated cases or single platforms, neglecting the broader impact of digital affordances on neologism formation. This gap restricts our understanding of the processes behind online lexical innovation. The study aims to address this deficiency by comparing neologisms across multiple social media channels, thereby providing a comprehensive view of how digital environments drive linguistic creativity (Chukwu, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
To compare neologism formation on various social media platforms.
To analyze the morphological and semantic characteristics of online neologisms.
To identify factors that drive linguistic creativity in digital contexts.
Research Questions:
What neologisms emerge on different social media platforms in Nigeria?
How do platform features influence lexical innovation?
What cultural and technological factors drive these creative processes?
Significance of the Study
This study advances our understanding of digital language evolution by comparing neologism formation across social media. Its findings are valuable for linguists and digital media scholars, offering insights into the mechanisms of linguistic creativity in Nigeria (Adeniyi, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to selected Nigerian social media platforms.
Definitions of Terms:
Neologisms: Newly coined words or expressions.
Social Media: Digital platforms used for communication.
Linguistic Creativity: The innovative use of language.
